Roman Triumphal Arch as a Landmark for an Innovative Water Storage System

At Aarplein in Alphen aan den Rijn, the Triumphal Arch has been realized as a striking public artwork that uniquely combines cultural heritage and climate adaptation. In collaboration with the Municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn, Mothership developed a design that makes an innovative water storage system visible and accessible within the public realm.

At the heart of the design is a water column that forms part of an advanced system for collecting, storing and reusing rainwater. During periods of heavy rainfall, excess water is captured and stored deep underground, helping to reduce flooding and water nuisance. During dry periods, the stored water can be pumped back up to irrigate trees and plants.

The Triumphal Arch is part of GreenLED, an initiative that brings together innovative solutions for climate adaptation and healthy urban environments. The BlueBloqs system integrated into the project makes underground water infrastructure visible to residents and visitors. Incorporated into the artwork, the BlueTube literally demonstrates the central role of water within the design.

The project creates a natural connection between past and future. The flowing water refers to the historical significance of the River Rhine as the northern frontier of the Roman Empire and part of the limes. In doing so, the Triumphal Arch makes the Roman history of Alphen aan den Rijn visible and tangible once again within the contemporary urban landscape.

With the realization of the Triumphal Arch, the limes has gained a new presence in public space. A future phase of the project will include the construction of an aqueduct, further bringing the story of the Roman presence in the region to life. Together with the Municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn, Mothership uses the limes as a cultural treasure map that connects past, present and future.
