Silent Sky Project #97
On 6 June 2026, Mothership, in collaboration with Stichting RUST in de Reuring and the Laurenskerk, realized Silent Sky Project #97 by artist Rob Sweere. More than 200 participants gathered in front of Rotterdam’s Laurenskerk to take part in this unique participatory artwork, inspired by the philosophy of Erasmus and his well-known saying: “Make haste slowly.”
Silent Sky Project is an international participatory artwork that has been realized dozens of times in cities around the world. For this Rotterdam edition, participants were invited to spend thirty minutes lying in silence, gazing at the sky above them. Amid the pace and distractions of daily life, the project created a collective moment of rest, reflection and imagination.
Although everyone looked at the same sky, each participant experienced the work in a personal way. The project highlighted the value of silence and stillness within an urban environment that is constantly in motion.
Following the silent experience, participants gathered at Grotekerkplein for a communal lunch, where they exchanged reflections and discussed the importance of rest in contemporary society. In this way, the artwork extended beyond the thirty-minute experience itself, helping to further spread the message of Stichting RUST in de Reuring.
Mothership was responsible for the creative production of the project and documented the event through photography and film. As a result, this Rotterdam edition of Silent Sky has become a lasting part of the international project while remaining accessible to a wider audience.
The day concluded with a performance of The Sound of Silence by Laurenskerk carillonneur Richard de Waardt.
