Johan Kleinjan is an illustrator who lives and works in Rotterdam. He graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy in 2000. Kleinjan works mostly on small-format using black-and-white and sometimes in color. Text and imagery are closely intertwined. At first glance, his drawings appear neutral observations, but on closer inspection they show subcutaneous fascinations for a strange outside world. His manual minimalist approach is a concept that is not imposed, but that comes forth in the act itself. Kleinjan focuses on sharpening his handwriting in which he strives for clear mysteriousness.
