Bombardment Periphery
Bombardment Periphery May 14, 2007
On the 14th of May, 1940, the center of Rotterdam was devastated by aerial bombardment. The beams of light on the 14th of May, 2007 revealed the boundaries of the section of the city that was destroyed that day. When planning the reconstruction of the heart of Rotterdam, the City Council at that time chose to build a new Rotterdam instead of restoring the old. That is why there is such a clear distinction between the old and the new in Rotterdam.
The exact course of the bombardment periphery will be unknown to most people today, but had a lot to do with the contemporary architecture of Rotterdam. This light project shows us how proud we can be of this new city.
The project of lighting the bombardment periphery with 128 space cannons was commissioned by Rotterdam 2007 City of Architecture. The “space cannons”, each producing 7000 watts, were lit between 10:.45 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. More than 12 kilometers of cable, 54 mobile generator units and 100 technicians were also necessary to light the sky above Rotterdam. With special thanks to Haine AV, for the lighting.
