Giant of Vlaardingen
Title: The Giant of Vlaardingen
Year: 2002/03
Locations: De Strip (Vlaardingen), NAi (Dutch Architecture Institute, Rotterdam) and Robodock Festival (Oud IJsselmonde, Rotterdam)
Dimensions: 8 x 10.5 x 5.5 meter
Materials: Salvaged wood, nails, screws and rope
Commissioned by: MAMA Showroom for Media and Moving Art, Jeanne van Heeswijk
with the participation of: Harm Jan Timmerarends
With assistance from local people, MAMA volunteers and friends
As part of Jeanne van Heeswijk’s social art project ‘De Strip’ in the city of Vlaardingen, I was assigned to make a sculpture out of salvaged wood. It took three months to build, with the assistance of local people. The sculpture is an assemblage, and although the quality of the wood was poor, it stood on two other locations after being shown for 2.5 hours on its primary location, the Westwijk in Vlaardingen. Rabbits never sit still for too long!
